Cowboys suffer historic loss to Roosters, coach calls it ‘darkest day’

'Absolutely unacceptable': Cowboys concede 82 points in historic NRL defeat

The North Queensland Cowboys experienced a significant defeat against the Sydney Roosters, with coach Todd Payten describing it as the club’s “darkest day.” Captain Reuben Cotter also characterised the game as the “most embarrassing” he had participated in. The Roosters scored 82 points, marking the most points conceded in the Cowboys‘ club history and their biggest losing margin.

The Roosters‘ performance included 14 tries, making their 82 points the third-highest score of all time in a premiership match, falling short of the record set in 1935 by St George by nine points. Sam Walker contributed 36 points, which is tied for the fourth-highest individual points total in a premiership game. This victory marked the Roosters‘ sixth consecutive win.

Pre-game concerns and halftime dominance

Payten expressed his apologies to both members and fans who attended the match and those who watched from home. He noted that the game was effectively decided within the first 20 minutes. The coach also revealed that he had observed some “worrying” signs during the warm-up, feeling that the Roosters appeared to move faster and tackle harder even before the match officially began.

The Roosters established a commanding lead by halftime, scoring 48 points. This total equalled the highest number of points scored in an opening half of football in NRL history. Despite their strong first-half showing, they did not manage to break the all-time points record of 91. The outcome of the match could see the Cowboys drop out of the top eight, depending on the result of an upcoming game between the Bulldogs and the Storm.

Player reactions and coaching approach

Cotter, who had only two runs during the match, attributed the team’s performance to a lack of physical presence and being disorganised across the field. He acknowledged that the loss would be painful but stressed the importance of the team sticking together and preparing for the next week’s game on the Gold Coast.

The defeat followed a derby win for the Cowboys against the Broncos just five days prior. However, Payten dismissed the short turnaround as an excuse, stating that the issue was mental. He indicated that he would not review the game footage, instead focusing on discussing the performance and preparing the team to return to work on Monday. Payten affirmed his confidence in the current squad, stating that no changes would be made and that the team would have another opportunity to perform the following Thursday.

Roosters’ historical trend in Townsville

The Roosters have a notable history of success when playing in Townsville. During Brad Fittler‘s playing career with the team between 1996 and 2004, the Roosters maintained a nine-year winning streak against the Cowboys in Townsville. More recently, the team has continued this trend, securing victories in their last three games at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, dating back to round nine in 2020.

This pattern is considered unusual given the challenging conditions of hot and humid weather, coupled with the long travel required for games in Townsville. Despite this, the Cowboys have had some recent success against the Roosters, winning three of their last four clashes. These victories included two matches at Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium and one at Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

The Roosters had not played in Townsville since 2022, when they won a round four match 28-4. Prior to that, they secured a 34-18 victory in a round eight 2021 clash and a 42-16 win in a round nine 2020 match. The historical incentive for these away games was once shared by Fittler, who recalled that under coach Phil Gould, players were motivated by the promise of social outings if they won. The Cowboys hosted the Roosters to commence round 22 on Thursday night.
