Nicoll-Klokstad returns to fullback for Warriors against Titans

'They're definitely on the rise': Warriors v Titans – All you need to know

Nicoll-Klokstad’s Return to Fullback

Veteran Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad will start at fullback for the One New Zealand Warriors in their upcoming NRL clash against the Gold Coast Titans. This marks his first start in the number one jersey in over three months. The match is scheduled for Saturday at Cbus Super Stadium in Robina, with a 3:00 pm local time kick-off.

Nicoll-Klokstad’s return comes as he replaces Taine Tuaupiki, who sustained a sprained foot during last week’s loss to the Canterbury Bulldogs. Tuaupiki is expected to be sidelined for one to two weeks. This is the only change to the starting lineup from the team’s 6-18 defeat to the Bulldogs.

Nicoll-Klokstad, who will make his 146th career appearance, has played 10 matches this season, which has been impacted by injuries. His last appearance at fullback was also against the Titans in April, during the Warriors’ 28-20 victory at Go Media Stadium.

Injury Comeback and Versatility

Nicoll-Klokstad has been dealing with a neck injury that kept him out for nearly two months, following a concussion in round two against the Canberra Raiders. During his absence, Tuaupiki had a strong run, leading the team in tacklebreaks (80), runs (298), and metres run (2793) over 16 games.

Despite his recent selection at fullback, Nicoll-Klokstad stated he does not view it as an opportunity to permanently reclaim the position. He sees it as a chance to play at the back and contribute to the team. He has played in various positions this season, including centre, wing, and even five-eighth as an injury replacement.

His versatility was highlighted in June when he scored four tries against the North Queensland Cowboys in a 38-20 win at Christchurch’s One NZ Stadium. This performance, which saw him play on the wing, demonstrated his value to the club.

Wayde Egan, the team’s hooker, commented on Nicoll-Klokstad’s presence, noting that the club is fortunate to have two strong fullbacks. Egan added that Nicoll-Klokstad consistently performs well, regardless of his position, though fullback is considered his primary role.

Team Lineup and Recent Form

Egan himself has been named to start against the Gold Coast and is one of only two players, alongside lock Erin Clark, to have retained his spot in every game this season. Egan confirmed he is fit to play despite a hamstring issue during the last game, which occurred after Tuaupiki’s early exit forced a change in coach Andrew Webster’s substitution plans.

The Warriors’ full lineup for the match includes Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Alofiana Khan-Pereira on the wings, with Ali Leiataua and Adam Pompey in the centres. Chanel Harris-Tavita is at five-eighth and Te Maire Martin at halfback. The forward pack features James Fisher-Harris, Egan, Mitchell Barnett, Kurt Capewell, Jacob Laban, and Clark.

The interchange bench consists of Sam Healey, Tanner Stowers-Smith, Leka Halasima, and Luke Metcalf. The extended bench includes Eddie Ieremia-Toeava, Jacob Auloa, and Riley Price. The Warriors slipped to third on the ladder after last week’s loss and the Roosters’ one-point win over the Knights.

The Gold Coast Titans, currently 13th on the ladder, are coming off consecutive wins against the Sea Eagles and Dragons. Their lineup includes Keano Kini at fullback, Dean Ieremia and Phillip Sami on the wings, and Jojo Fifita and AJ Brimson in the centres. Jayden Campbell is at five-eighth and Zane Harrison at halfback. The Titans’ forward pack features Moeaki Fotuaika, Oliver Pascoe, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Arama Hau, Beau Fermor, and Chris Randall. The match officials include Senior Review Official Wyatt Raymond.
