Woodland, Cantlay, and MacIntyre advance to TOUR Championship as Fowler misses out

Top 30 update: Rickie Fowler misses as Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay, Robert MacIntyre advance to TOUR Championship - PGA Tour

Key Qualifications for the TOUR Championship

Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay, and Robert MacIntyre have secured their spots in the upcoming TOUR Championship, following strong performances that saw them advance in the FedExCup Playoffs. Their qualification means they will join the top 30 players competing at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. This event marks the conclusion of the 2026 FedExCup Playoffs.

Conversely, Rickie Fowler, Kurt Kitayama, and Bud Cauley did not qualify for the season finale, dropping out of the FedExCup top 30. Fowler, who has only made it to the TOUR Championship once in the last seven seasons, will not participate in this year’s event. His team reviewed projections, but the outcome was not favourable.

Individual Journeys to Atlanta

Gary Woodland‘s path to the TOUR Championship involved overcoming personal challenges. The 42-year-old American, who started the week at No. 31 in the FedExCup standings, finished in a tie for fourth at 12-under. This result propelled him to 18th in the FedExCup, securing his first appearance at the TOUR Championship since 2019, the year he won the U.S. Open. Woodland has been managing post-traumatic stress disorder related to a brain tumour removal three years prior, noting that large crowds and loud noises can be triggers. He described a shift in mindset on the final day, stating he tried to “embrace it” after struggling to block out distractions on Saturday.

Robert MacIntyre, a Scotsman, demonstrated a notable turnaround to qualify. Last week, he withdrew from the FedEx St. Jude Championship after shooting an 82 in the first round due to right knee pain caused by a cyst. Despite this, he managed to move from No. 36 to No. 25 in the FedExCup standings, extending his season on the PGA TOUR. MacIntyre expressed satisfaction with his performance, calling his final round “absolutely beautiful.”

Patrick Cantlay faced the most challenging task among the trio, beginning the week at 43rd in the FedExCup. He ultimately finished as runner-up with a Sunday score of 68, moving him to 19th in the standings and securing his spot. His 185-yard approach on the 18th hole helped set up a birdie, contributing to his successful qualification.

Implications for Qualified and Non-Qualified Players

For the 30 players who qualified for the TOUR Championship, securing a spot brings significant benefits. They lock in exemptions for the 2027 major championships and also receive a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR. The field for the 2026 TOUR Championship includes notable names such as Scottie Scheffler, who enters as the FedExCup leader for the fifth consecutive season, and Wyndham Clark, who earned his sixth PGA TOUR career win and third victory of the 2026 season at the BMW Championship, moving him to No. 3 in the FedExCup standings.

Other top qualifiers include Matt Fitzpatrick (No. 2), Cameron Young (No. 4), and Si Woo Kim (No. 5). Collin Morikawa (No. 7) and Rory McIlroy (No. 11) are also among the players who have qualified for the season finale.

For those who missed out, like Rickie Fowler, the situation is less favourable. Fowler, currently ranked 44th, needs to maintain his world ranking within the top 50 by the end of the year to qualify for the Masters. He has missed 10 majors in the last seven years, and his membership on the PGA TOUR is not guaranteed beyond 2027, highlighting the importance of the two-year exemption. The TOUR Championship will be broadcast live, with coverage on ESPN, Golf Channel, and CBS from August 27 to August 31.
